Summer Fun In The Portland Fountains

Ira Keller Forecourt Fountain

Our Missionary Recommendation Forms are progressing forward.  Norma finished her physical examination early in the week and I was able to get an earlier appointment and finish mine last Friday.  I have some follow-ups next week, but otherwise it looks like the dental appointments will be the only things that are holding us up now.

Our main walk this week was downtown.  We had a couple of appointments so we walked around to see some of the wonderful fountains in Portland.  It has been many years since we had visited the Lovejoy Fountain and the Ira Keller Forecourt Fountain both of which were designed by Lawrence Halprin.  The other fountains on our stroll were installed during the past couple of years and were new to us.  We have also not taken the opportunity to walk around in downtown for many years.  We were impressed again as to the beauty of our city.

We have two large laurel hedges in front of the apartments.  They have grown so thick (fat) that it is almost impossible to reach from each side to the middle.  My goal is to reduce the thickness by one quarter before we leave again.  I have almost finished the smaller of the two, and hope to begin on the larger one.  I’m getting a good physical workout while doing it.

We gave our homecoming talks in the Milwaukie Ward today, and at a fifth Sunday presentation in the Alameda Ward.  The talks seemed to go well.  Norma always suffers from anxiety for weeks before she gives a talk or makes a presentation, so life is much better now.

Starting The Forms

Portland from Washington Park
Washington Park Rose Garden

We have just returned from presenting our missionary experiences to the youth of the Clackamas Ward.  It was held at Bishop Tucker’s home.  There were eight Young Men and Young Women and six adults.  It’s vacation time now and we were told we should not expect a very big crowd.  It was a good meeting with a lot of questions and comments.  We enjoy making these presentations because it reminds us of the wonderful experiences we had on our mission.

Our reading this week has brought us to the fortieth chapter of Exodus.  Among other significant scriptures we found verses 12 and 13: “And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and wash them with water. And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments, and anoint him, and sanctify him; that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.” This was also a good reminder of our mission.  There isn’t a day goes by that we do not think of the Copenhagen Denmark Temple and our friends there.  We frequently look at the clock and wonder what is happening in the Temple at that time.

As you can probably tell, we are wanting to get going on our next mission.  We met with the Bishop last Sunday to get the “go ahead” to start filling out the Missionary Recommendation Forms.  We have now completed them except for getting our Physician’s Health Evaluation Forms and Dental Evaluation Forms finished and sent to the Bishop.  The problem we have now is getting an early appoint with our doctors so they can fill out the forms.  Norma will finish her physical evaluation tomorrow; however, my doctor can’t see me until August 16th.  It is also difficult to get an appointment with the dentist.  We had hoped to have sent the recommendation forms to Salt Lake by now but that will happen sometime in August.
Salmon Rose

Our main walk this week was in the Washington Park rose garden (Portland is the Rose City) and around the knoll at Council Crest.  We are constantly reminded of the many beautiful areas of Portland.  It was approaching late evening, so we agreed to come back earlier next time so we could have a longer period of sunlight.

The Parties Continue

Waterfront Park
View of Portland from Eastbank

One day this week, while driving to an assignment, we listened to an interesting interview.  A very talented author who responds, on a daily publication, to life’s questions submitted by the general public was being interviewed.  After discussing a particular response she had written, regarding a touching question by a small ill child, her interviewer asked, “What were her resources for giving such good advice”.  She said she listens to her inner voice, and when her heart seemed to blossom she feels she has the right information.  Later in the interview, in response to a comment about how appropriately spiritual her advice was, she commented that she didn’t believe in God.  I thought to myself how contradictory her comments were – while saying she didn’t believe in God at the same time she was giving advice based on the prompting she was receiving from the Holy Ghost.  She did; however, later say that maybe she did believe in God, but not the one in which everyone else believed.

We finished Genesis and began Exodus.  We are not racing the calendar, but we started the Standard Works last October.  The Church coarse of study in 2011 was the New Testament and we played “catch up” to finish reading it by January.  In January we started reading the Book of Mormon, the coarse of study for 2012.  We have continued by reading two to four chapters each morning at breakfast we have finished the Pearl of Great Price and the Doctrine and Covenants.  We will continue on through the Old Testament with an undetermined deadline.  The most “moving” part so far is from Genesis chapter 45:

“And there stood no man with him, while Joseph made himself known unto his brethren.  And he wept aloud:  and the Egyptians and the house of Pharaoh heard.  And he fell upon his brother Benjamin’s neck, and wept; and Benjamin wept upon his neck.  Moreover he kissed all his brothren, and wept upon them: and after that his brethren talked with him.  And the fame thereof was heard in Pharaoh’s house, saying, Joseph’s brethren are come:  and it pleased Pharaoh well, and his servants.”
Case Bodmer

On Tuesday we attended the ten o’clock session at the Temple and then we had the opportunity to be with Case for a couple of hours in the afternoon.  He is smart and cute and a joy to tend.  We walked up and down the Waterfront Park.

While we were at the park enjoying the wonderful summer weather, and the beauty of the Park, it occurred to me that we have spent the past two years showing you the beauties of Copenhagen, now we should do our daily walks around Portland and show you the beauties of Portland.

Wednesday, after the internet installation, and Thursday we helped Angie with preparations for the Wedding Reception on Saturday.
Case

The Cortez family was leaving town on Friday, so we, after spending some time at Angie and Zach’s and tending Case for an hour or so, spent the night at Tova and Jeff’s so Roscoe, the dog, would not be alone and would get some food and water.

On Saturday we helped finish the decorations and then celebrated McAllister and Denita’s wedding again.  Except for the Cortez’s, our whole family was together.  We overnighted at the Cortez’s again.

Norma celebrated her birthday today by attending her church meetings and preparing for the Youth Fireside in the Gateway Ward.  The refreshments at the fireside were prepared by Teresa and were served as Norma’s birthday cake.

Parties, Parties And More Parties

Home Sweet Home
Our Little Temporary Apartment

We are still a bit in limbo since arriving back in Portland.  We are home, but not home.  As you know we are interested in going back out in the Mission Field as soon as we can, so we have taken up temporary residence in a one-bedroom apartment several blocks from our permanent house, which is occupied by Kae and Kerry and the kids.  It doesn’t make sense for them to move until we finish the next mission.

We have enjoyed spending time with the family.  The grandkids seem not to have forgotten us and enjoy spending time with us.  Thanks to skype they were able to recognize us without any hesitation.  We look forward to spending time with each individual family, separate from the big group, during the next few months, so we can create some unique memories for each of the grandchildren.
Fourth Of July Breakfast

When we arrived at the apartment we found it furnished with some of our own furniture and the kitchen stocked with food and utensils.   Enough stuff to keep us alive for awhile; however, we have been invited out to eat almost every day we have been home.  We celebrated with food several days at McAllister and Denita’s wedding events and again on the fourth of July there was more food than we could eat.  If you thought we had lost weight while living in Denmark, don’t worry; we will put it back on at this rate.

Last Sunday we had the opportunity of attending church in our home ward and greeting our many friends.  They were very gracious in their “welcome homes”.  We enjoyed the testimonies and the good feeling of being home.  I must say however, that it was not without thinking about our Frederiksberg Ward back in Copenhagen.  In fact, throughout the past two weeks we have frequently checked the clock to fantasize what was happening in our favorite Temple.  I have, on many occasions, visualized passing the recommend desk and walking down the circular stairs to the dressing rooms.  I have visualized being in the Baptistery, the ordinance rooms and the Celestial Room.  We don’t ever want to forget the wonderful feelings we had while serving there.
Kids Bicycle Parade

Tuesday morning we attended a session at the Portland Temple.  It was unusual to see the ordinance room filled to capacity (I have been to many sessions in the Portland Temple when there were only ten to fifteen in attendance).  I thought back to Copenhagen, when there were only ten to fifteen in attendance and started calculating which temple experienced the higher percentage of attendance.  If a Stake has approximately 2,800 members the calculation is thus:  The Portland Temple District with fifty stakes has 140,000 members.  A session of fifteen has a percentage of .0001.  The Copenhagen Temple District with three stakes has 8400 members.  A session of fifteen has a percentage of .002.  Even when the Portland Temple has a full session of sixty-two, which we had last Tuesday, the percentage of attendance is .0004.  The attendance of fifteen has no significance; it was used only because it was a common figure for both temples.
Emerson and Dakota

On Wednesday we celebrated the fourth of July by attending the Flag Ceremony and breakfast at the church with Milwaukie and Clackamas wards combined.  Kae and Dakota and Emerson came with us.  Later in the day we gathered at Sellwood Park for a picnic. In the evening we sat on the ridge overlooking Oaks Park and the city to watch the fireworks on display.  Tova and Jeff, Rick and Pam, Kitta and Peter, and Karen were there with the kids, Kyton, Simon and Case.  It was a wonderful summer day.  The first since we arrived in town.  Up to now, the weather in Portland and Copenhagen has been very similar; however, our forecast and Copenhagen’s forecast for the next week is quite different.
Us With Kyton

Friday evening we were invited to Bill and Peggy Self’s for a get-together with family and many old friends from the old Alameda Ward.  Bit by bit we are getting connected to our former “life” again.

Saturday we celebrated Kyton’s birthday at Jan’s.  She always put on a great feast.  We were there with Kyton & Simon, Tova & Jeff, Rick & Pam and Jan & Dave and Gigi.  Again, it was a wonderful summer evening with enough breeze to make the air comfortable.

Tonight we gathered at our house, which is Kae & Kerry’s for now, and celebrated Kyton’s and Norma’s birthdays.  Everyone was there except Kirsten whom we haven’t seen since we arrived home.  We hope to get together with her this week at her workplace.
Angie and Dash kissing Kae

It is a very unusual circumstance that has us being invited to our own house for dinner, and seeing someone else driving up to the dinner in my car, and leaving our house after the dinner together with the rest of our children.   I guess we’ll get used to living in a makeshift environment.

I hope you all found our new address.

I’ll close for now.

We love you all.
